Reasoner's epic 10 book American Civil War battle series (called the Civil War 'cause Americans think they had the only one) tells the tale of the Brannon family as the go through the entire war. These are an easy read and cover all the major battles (both Eastern and Western theatres), with descriptions of combats similar to, but just not quite, Cornwell in description. He does seem to strive to prove how quite remarkably accurate shots a bunch of Virginian farm boys turned out to be! The other criticism is that all the women they encountered turned out to be stunningly beautiful - even when they are half starved to death at the end of the war.
If you ignore his heavily pro-Southern bias and some historical inaccuracies which irritated me a little bit, this proved to be a very good series. He interweaves the major characters with his fictional ones, probably better than Cornwell, without rewriting any events - so give them a go if you like war stories.
