The first true book in the Lensman series even though Smith rewrote Triplanetary to be the first in the series the attempt seemed very forced to me. First Lensman introduces us to the powers of the Lens in that the wearer can use telepathy and via this can work out the true plans and motives of a person. We are also more fully introduced to the ancient conflict between two races who have long since mastered the powers of the mind and placed the humans in the bigger picture of the universe. Some epic battles, rescued women and strange new worlds finish out this solid scifi book that leads directly into the next Galactic Patrol.
Campaign notes:
The Lensmen travel around the galaxy and visit various planets, each with is own characteristic and this needs to be remembered. No vanilla planets, so may need to limit the size of the galaxy. The ongoing theme of Imperial scifi - a few men (deliberate choice of word) can do a lot in terms of affecting the galaxy around them.

The Lensmen were, apparently, one of the influences on the Green Lantern Corps in DC Comics.

Interesting. I wonder if there are other cross overs - powerful telepathic races battling it out over the universe with humans caught in the mix? But equally being the pivotal beings that govern the outcome of the fight.
