Having been unable to track down any of Keith Laumer's series of books on the self-aware battle tanks (due to them being out of print and being obscure books), I have chosen to read Weber's authorised journey into Laumer's universe. Weber tells a very good battle story so it is no real hardship.
Bolos - self aware battle tanks the size of a small fortress and mobile with it, armed with Hellbore plasma guns and have the armaments of a battle ship on land. Couple this with a human/AI interface and you get a machine designed for battle.
Weber chooses to tell four stories of progressively more advanced Bolo tanks and the wars they are involved in with his usual eye for detail and overwhelming fire power that you associate with the later Honor Harrington books.
They are a good read but a bit of a departure from the genre of 50/60s SciFi the project revolves around.
Campaign notes
Self-aware battle tanks in the 32,000 tonne range, just imagine the damage the players could do with one of these! As it doesn't really fit with the genre, I will use some of the feel of the stories in background rather than anything concrete from this.
