4e - Epic tier awesome

There have been three sessions since my last post on the 4e campaign, the first two being spotlight sessions for the ranger, Artemis and the third the first of my two sessions. The events are well documented on the AP thread. However, the key thing to note has been the shift in the way the game is run.

We, as characters, are now in the epic tier and have god-like powers which mainly comes out in the flavour text of skill challenges (such as Azhanti's mass turning with his paladins) but less so in the combat, at least it would first appear. However, if you consider minions (and henchman - the name that has been given to more powerful yet not 1HP monster like minions) then the power becomes a bit clearer. Minions and henchmen represent the lower tier of being, with minions being heroic tier and henchmen paragon tier. They can still damage us but are not considered a serious threat. Our powers are most challenged when fighting epic tier beasts (like the awesome grave golem) and the ease at which these powers can wipe minions (i.e. heroic tier characters) is a reflection of the growth in our power.

The GM has also relaxed the hold he had on the campaign and a lot more player authoring is being introduced and allowed to stand. Equally, if we complete all the skill challenges without a failure, then we get to author a change in the world - from altering the end result of destroying the world tree so that Artemis now has control of the Oasis rather than its destruction, to our knowledge of the different pocket universes to a display of godly might. All of this has worked to create a superb atmosphere where we are now believing we are awesome individuals who can seriously affect the world we live in.

I am most definitely looking forward to the ending of my spotlight session as we confront the Dragonborn Emperor for control of Arkhosia but equally to the remaining sessions as we deal with Morn's sessions.
