The penultimate book continues in similar pattern to the previous books, but the familiarity is always tempered with good plot/character development. Considering this a 'journey home' story with certain elements repeated (jumping from one system to the next) the author assumes that the reader has read the previous books thus doesn't belabour the aspects he assumes you are familiar with, which allows him to quickly drive both plot and further characterisation. A good book that sets up to the final book very well.
